Gotz Refuses Campaign Contributions During Primaries
Points to Outside Money Influencing Local Elections
When I announced that I was running for office a few weeks ago my phone started ringing almost immediately. People were lining up with a phone in one hand and a checkbook in the other.
"This is wonderful. How much do you need?"
I’m so excited that you’re finally running. Where do I send the check?
What’s the maximum I can contribute?
To everyone I said,
No thank you. I am not accepting any contributions during the primary.
You see, there is a lot of talk about outside money influencing our local elections, and I believe it to be true.
I want you to know that when you vote for me, you're voting for me and not for any special interest that is paying my way. That when I’m in Tallahassee, I will be representing you, and not any special interests. The only way I can prove that is not to take anyone’s money.
I like when people get to keep more of their own money, and this time is no different.
I will accept your support, your verbal goodwill, your vote. I ask that you spread the word to your friends, family, and co-workers. This campaign will be true grassroots because that’s the way it should be.
If you feel the need to write a check, by all means, select a good and worthy local charity and give from your heart. -Mark
